I've done that before. :D

Typical managers don't care about in-line comments and other forms of useful documentation not specified in the requirements document, so a useful compromise is often just to leave old crap commented out for latent informational value, which often decays a lot faster than anyone bothers to cut it from the file.

Managers who care more about the number of check-ins are in my experience uniformly worse than those who care about the number of bugs resolved.

Do the same some time. :P

But in general I hate to see code commented if it don't have no more utility. There is SCM tools to track code change and revert.
