Actually, sqrt(2x) - 20 = 0 results in x = 200 ...subtle :P

I assume you meant it to be
sqrt(2x)-20=0
which gives the solution 200.
However, as it is right now, it's
sqrt(2)*x-20=0
which gives the solution 10*sqrt(2) or about 14.14214.
Implied multiplication has no special status.
